On Monday, November 4th, WHS held a “Choices Matter” assembly where motivational speaker, Chris Sandy, talked about the courage to make safe and healthy choices, and how the choices you make can impact you, your family, and the people around you. At the age of 22, while speeding from one party to the next, he crashed into a car on the street. The impact of his DUI crash ripped his victims’ vehicle in half, pinning an elderly couple inside. Sandy was sentenced to thirteen years in prison followed by another seventeen years of probation. After his sentence, and still serving parole, he goes from school to school talking to students about their choices and how his experiences can become another person’s reality. “You have the power to make choices that save lives,” says Sandy. Even though the crash was 24 years ago, he still deals with the impact from the situation. He deals with his guilt through creating programs and volunteering to help families that have lost their loved ones to alcohol related crashes. Sandy also has a documentary called, “Enduring Regret” that won an EMMY award. We thank Chris Sandy for showing the WHS students about the dangers and consequences of unwise decisions.
