Mr. Genua’s Unified Civics class and Mr. Burgos Multi-Language learners recently took a trip to Apple Rehab in Watertown, with Mr. Burgos (MLL teacher), Mr. O’Connor (Psych teacher), Mrs. McBride (Special Education), and the paraeducators who support the class. The purpose of the visit was to build connections between the students and the residents of the convalescent home, with the intent of building lasting relationships for future activities and events. The trip provided the students with a valuable opportunity to step outside the classroom, meet new people, and get a better understanding of the world around them.
While they were there, the students and residents were divided into smaller groups to play a variety of board and card games: such as Uno and Chutes & Ladders. This helped and allowed everyone to get to know one another before the class officially begins during the second semester. The trip went really well for the elderly residents because many of them rarely have visitors, especially young people, during the day. With students being there it brightened the residents’ moods and it was clear that the connection between the Unified students and the residents was formed and was very meaningful for both groups.
A highlight of the trip was the personal connections made between the students and the residents. Seniors helping the class, Rylee Perugini and Kayla Bekech, were especially moved by the stories residents shared. “It felt great to give back to our community,” Kayla said, reflecting on the trip. Both Rylee and Kayla enjoyed their time at Apple Rehab and expressed a strong desire to visit again in the future. Overall, the visit was a success for both the Unified and MLL students and the residents, creating a sense of connection and a good bond.
