Movie Review: The Super Mario Bros. Movie

The Super Mario Bros. Movie, released on April 5, 2023, is based on the Nintendo video game characters the Mario Brothers, voiced by Chris Pratt and Charlie Day. The brothers are plumbers featured in various games including Mario Kart, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Maker, and more. The main Mario games are about Mario going through different worlds of the Mushroom Kingdom to save Princess Peach from Bowser, and defeating Bowser’s minions along the way.

The movie itself is about Mario and Luigi falling down a pipe which transports them to the Mushroom Kingdom, a world they have never seen before. Luigi gets trapped and imprisoned by Bowser, voiced by Jack Black, an evil Koopa Turtle whose motive is to propose and marry Princess Peach, voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy, and take over all the other Kingdoms together. While Luigi is held captive by Bowser, Mario assists Princess Peach in saving her Kingdom in an attempt to find his brother. The movie follows the journey of Peach, Mario, and Toad going on their adventure trying to gather the Kong Army to stop Bowser from taking over. While seeing these characters being so passionate about stopping Bowser we also saw Bowser creating his master plan to propose to Peach and confess his love for her, adding to the comedy aspect of the movie.

I would give this movie a 10/10. The soundtrack was excellent, including Bowser’s beautifully written song “Peaches” about his love for the princess. Other songs included are ‘Take on me’ By A-ha and ‘Holding out for a Hero’ by Bonnie Tyler. Everyone in the theater loved the imprisoned Luma Star, voiced by Michelle Ruff, who was beyond prepared for its death but seemed so happy and full of joy about it.
