The recent school theatre production of Fantastic Mr. Fox was a great play filled with talented students, and a stunning set, who brought Roald Dahl’s story to life. It was directed by Harrison Gowell, and Lola Vaina was the art director. The show, performed through the 14th-16th, drew an impressive crowd and left the audience entertained.
The set design was one of the standout aspects of the production, with a vibrant red barn as the focal point of the stage. The details and layout transformed the stage, immersing the audience in Mr. Fox’s world. The set changes and the show ran smoothly, thanks to the hardworking stage crew who kept the pace of the show running seamlessly. “Seeing everything come together, props that I painted, and seeing the scene where they are used is the most rewarding part,” said Lola Vaina, Student Art Director.
The actors truly shined in their roles, capturing the humor and heart of the story. With inspirational messages, it is hopeful that the audience felt a sense of nostalgia and was able to take something away from it. Each performer brought unique energy to their characters. The work and effort from the cast was very clear, and made Fantastic Mr. Fox as special as it truly was. Student Director Harrison Gowell says, “It was an extremely motivated group of actors, and I am so happy with the amount of effort displayed by my cast. I also had crew people working diligently on the set and such things, and the band was working hard after school to formulate a strong soundtrack. It never felt like we were tight on time, since everyone was working as hard as they could from day one.” Their chemistry on stage was evident. “I think there was a very strong family dynamic with the whole Fox family. As a whole, I think the entire cast, crew, and band were able to have great dynamics, and for the first time since I’ve been in theater, it felt like basically everyone got along well.” With their effort and the chemistry they all had together, the play was very dynamic and engaging.
This production sets the bar high for next year’s play. There is a lot people can learn from this production of Fantastic Mr. Fox. Most importantly, it is a production that will be unforgettable. Next up, the Watertown High School theatre production, will perform the Phantom of the Opera for the spring musical!
