The spring sport season is right around the corner, with the season officially starting at the end of March, including: Girls Lacrosse, Boys Lacrosse, Softball, Baseball, Girls Tennis, Boys Tennis, Girls Track and Field, Boys Track and Field, Golf, and the Unified Team. Leaders on each team are preparing for the upcoming season.
Girls Lacrosse:
Senior Captain Juliana Meglio is confident about the season, with strong key players and a goal to win the league and advance past the first round of states. The team has a good mix of experienced and new players, which will help with team dynamics. Pre-season conditioning started 3 at the beginning of March, focusing on agility, core, and lacrosse skills. The league seems weaker this year, making it a great opportunity to win. Juliana will work as a team and keep the team focused and ensure strong team chemistry. Her advice to new players: don’t be too hard on yourself and have fun!
Boys lacrosse:
Senior Captain Andrew Brown is optimistic about the season, with an experienced team and a handful of new players. Their goal is to win another championship. Although the team lost several seniors and some due to injury, they’ve started pre-season conditioning with wall ball, field work, and agility to prepare for the season. The league has lost seniors too, with a younger group coming up, making it beatable. Andrew will ensure players are well-prepared, conditioned, and foster good team chemistry. His advice to new players: be confident and not afraid on the field.
Softball:
Senior Captain Chandler Hancock is confident about the season, aiming for another NVL championship. The team has been working hard in the offseason, focusing on offensive team hitting for pre-season. The league is competitive, but Chandler believes in the team’s ability to compete and win with consistency, conditioning, and hard work. As captain, she will focus on integrating underclassmen and fostering a positive team environment. Her advice: work hard, stay positive, and leave any drama off the field.
Baseball:
Senior Captain Adam Howell is excited for a successful season and is focused on winning the NVL championship. The team has worked hard during the offseason, and while the league lost many key players, they only lost 3 seniors. The team is eager for rival games, especially against Holy Cross. As captain, Adam will lead, keep the team focused, and pick up his teammates. His advice: keep your head up and keep grinding.
Girls Tennis:
Senior Captain Vanessa Cipriano is excited for the season, with many new players joining Varsity. The goal is to defend their NVL championship title. Despite losing 6 key players, she’s confident in the hard work of the new girls who’ve been preparing since freshman year. Though there was limited pre-season conditioning, she plans to have the team practice and hit the courts before the season starts. She believes they have a strong shot at the NVL title since the league lost a lot of key seniors. Her focus is on making sure the team has fun, improves daily, and supports each other. Her advice to underclassmen: don’t be afraid to try something new.
Boys Tennis:
Senior Captain Brendan Maton is excited for the season, aiming to win a good amount of matches while having fun with his teammates. The team looks strong despite being smaller and lacking pre-season conditioning. Tennis is unpredictable, with each match being unique, but he’s confident the team can win the league with flying colors. As captain, he’ll ensure everyone puts in effort, stays focused, and enjoys themselves while playing. With a small team, everyone is close and has a strong bond with the coach. His advice to the team: trust the process.
Girls Track & Field:
Senior Captain Ryann Walsh is confident about the upcoming season, with a goal of achieving their best at NVLs and States while setting new PRs. After a successful indoor season, she aims to carry that momentum into the outdoor season, especially with a strong senior class eager to make their mark. Though there’s been no pre-season conditioning, athletes have been preparing on their own. The league is competitive, with Naugatuck as a tough contender, but Ryann believes the team can win by putting in the work and staying confident. As captain, she aims to motivate her teammates, help them grow, and be a source of support. Her advice to underclassmen: improvement takes time, mindset is key, and staying positive is crucial for success.
Boys Track & Field:
Senior Captains Jeremy Charbonneau and Edwin Vazquez are confident about the season, with a goal to win the NVL. The team is strong and versatile, especially in the sprinting and throwing events. While there’s limited pre-season conditioning, athletes can focus on event-specific drills in the off-season. The NVL is tough, with Naugatuck as a tough opponent, but the team believes they can compete and win in certain events. As captains, they will lead warm-ups, keep the team mentally focused, and be role models. Their advice to underclassmen: work hard in the off-season, as it’s the time to improve, and “want it more than the next guy.”
Golf:
Senior Captain Ava Kyle is excited for the upcoming season with a goal of scoring low at matches. Despite having a small team, she is confident they will make it work. For pre-season, the team focuses on chipping and putting at the range. The league looks strong, but Ava believes with hard work, the team can compete. She plans to recruit more players and, along with her fellow captain and new coach, ensure everyone enjoys practice and improves their skills. Her advice to underclassmen: enjoy the game, stay relaxed, and have fun playing with friends.
Unified:
Senior Captain Dylan Fekete is excited for the end of the Unified season. He is excited to play more games of soccer and kickball, and thinks the rest of the season will go great. The team will continue to improve on their teamwork and their skills. As captain, he will help the athletes improve their skills and ensure everyone is having fun.
