Album Review: Man on the Moon Trilogy
The Man On The Moon Trilogy by Kid Cudi is a remarkable series of albums that remain relevant years after their original release. Each album stands as it’s own work of art and Cudi’s masterful rapping, singing, and production is shown on these albums.
The first album, Man on the Moon: The End of Day, is his debut album from 2009 and put Cudi on the main stage. It features guest appearances from Kanye West and Common, and its production is a mix of lush synths, booming bass, and great drum beats. My favorite tracks are “Day ‘N’ Nite”, “Sky Might Fall”, and “Pursuit of Happiness”. This album is an absolute classic and a must listen for everyone trying to get into hip-hop. (10/10)
The second album, Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager, is darker and more introspective than the first. Cudi’s delivery is more aggressive, and the production is more experimental. Standout tracks include “Erase Me”, “GHOST!”, and “Mr. Rager”. This is my personal favorite of the trilogy, with every song being on my playlist. (10/10)
The third album, Man on the Moon III: The Chosen, marks a return to the sound of the first album, with more psychedelic production and melodic hooks. The album is an emotional journey, with Cudi reflecting on the hardships in his life and career. Standout tracks include “Tequila Shots”, “The Void”, and “Show Out”. There are some extremely strong tracks on this album, but it ultimately doesn’t live up to its predecessors. (8.5/10)
Overall, Kid Cudi’s Man on the Moon Trilogy is a captivating and emotional journey through the mind of one of hip-hop’s most creative and innovative artists. His production is genre-defying and his delivery is passionate and extremely hard hitting. Highly recommended.
