Watertown High School has started the year with a new daily schedule, moving from four long blocks to five shorter 62-minute periods. The old “odd” and “even” day system is gone, replaced by a consecutive period 1-8 system that makes it easier for everyone to keep track. Instead of daily Enrichment, students now have a single extension period with one of the classes a day where they can catch up on work, get extra help, or explore subjects more deeply. Teachers can provide support to their students in their classroom once every 8 days without having to track down students. Students say they like the shorter classes because they stay more engaged, though some miss having Enrichment every day. Principal Perugini hopes to adjust the schedule as needed to find what works best for both students and teachers.
