This fall, the Mills Complex introduced brand-new field lights, an upgrade that has been years in the making. The previous lighting system had become outdated, unreliable, and expensive to maintain. Only about three of the nine original lights still worked properly, and the old technology used a significant amount of energy.
Instead of continuously pouring money into temporary fixes, Facilities Director Luigi Valardi spent years setting aside funds for a full replacement. Principal Perugini noted that “he was really tactful in the way he did that, and he did a really good job.” Valardi worked closely with both the former Athletic Director and the current staff to keep everyone informed throughout the process. He saw the need for safer, more efficient lighting and developed a long-term plan to make it happen.
The new system features LED technology, which uses only a fraction of the wattage of the old lights while producing far more brightness. In fact, the district expects to save enough money in just two to three years to equal the entire installation cost. Hopefully the savings will continue for many years after. Because LEDs run cooler, last 10–15 times longer, and require little to no maintenance, they’re also far better for the environment and for the school budget. That money eventually goes right back to supporting students and improving facilities.
The improved lighting also enhances safety for athletes using the Mills Complex at night, especially in previously dim corner areas. Fans and Spectators now have a clearer view of plays, and the stronger visibility helps coaches and referees. This fall, the Mills Complex saw lots of use thanks to Mr. Bunel’s scheduling with WHS fall sports.
The installation came with few challenges, although it took longer than expected. What was originally planned as a one-day project stretched into about 7, and for a short time both old and new lights were set up at the same time. Still, administrators report nothing but positive feedback: “There was some pride behind that, that people see that we’re investing in our students and our facility” says Mr. Perugini. With the lighting upgrade complete, the next focus will be shifting indoors, turning attention to future improvements in the gym and auditorium.
