Watertown High School has introduced an Honor Society for Social Studies, offering students with a strong interest in history and related fields a new academic and service-based opportunity. The organization was created to recognize students who excel in social studies, since WHS did not have a club or honor society dedicated specifically to these subjects. Membership is open to juniors and seniors who have a minimum GPA of 3.0, have completed at least three full history courses, and demonstrate an interest in community involvement.
In its first year, the National Social Studies Honor Society plans to focus on community service, leadership, and fundraising. Goals include raising money for a group field trip and supporting local convalescent homes by visiting residents, playing games, and spending time with them. Members are expected to attend monthly meetings and to participate in activities such as volunteering for concession stands, bake sales, or creating cards for rehabilitation centers. The society also aims to promote civic engagement by offering leadership roles and giving students opportunities to plan events and manage service activities. The organization was formed with the support of faculty advisor Mr. Genua, who helped guide the approval process and assist with organizing applications and outreach to students interested in joining.
