As the winter sports season reaches its midpoint, our student-athletes have demonstrated grit, determination, and teamwork across the board. The captains reflected on their seasons and looked ahead to what’s next.
Boys Basketball: Pushing Through Pressure
Captain Dean LeMay advises younger students aspiring to be leaders to, ¨Be a positive role model, even through the rough points throughout the season.¨ He attributes his team’s success so far to scoring consistency, highlighting standout performances from Brody Geise. Looking ahead, LeMay stresses that, ¨handling the pressure on the road like we do at home¨ will be critical for the team’s continued success.
Girls Basketball: Overcoming Adversity
Ariellys Velez acknowledges that the team has faced challenges due to their players being on the smaller side and frequently playing against tougher city teams. She emphasizes that, ¨working as a team and using what everyone is good at¨ will be the key to overcoming adversity. Her advice to future captains is to, ¨Be vocal, lead by example, and remember to have fun-being a captain doesn’t put you above anybody.¨
Swim/Dive: Staying Motivated
Alban Kadiu keeps his teammates motivated by reminding them of past defeats and the work needed to succeed. ¨If we want to win, we have to finish it and not skip any laps,¨ he says. The team’s motto is, ¨Last one, fast one.¨ This encapsulates their drive to push through challenges and give their all in every practice and meet.
Boys Track/Field: Striving For Greatness
Eli Crofford finds balance between academics and athletics by focusing on schoolwork first, so he can give it his all on the track. He’s proud of how the program has improved during his time, noting it’s ¨Approaching its best year in a long time.¨ His sights are set on an NVL championship for the team.
Girls Track/Field: Leading by Example
Captain Lilly Khouri takes pride in helping teammates succeed, emphasizing hard work and effort as the key to success. ¨If everyone puts in their hardest work, shows up everyday, and always runs instead of walks, anyone can improve and be faster,¨ she says, emphasizing the importance of being a role model for underclassmen.
Hockey: Team Chemistry and Community Support
For Andrew Brown, the school community’s support is invaluable. ¨Hearing the stands go wild motivates us even more,¨ he says. Reflecting on his 4 years, Brown is proud of the team’s progress, crediting improved chemistry and a more comfortable environment for the program’s success.
From teamwork to perseverance, our winter sports teams show no shortage of determination. Let’s continue to support them as they pursue success in the second half of the season!
