In Paris, four masked robbers took eight French crown jewels, worth about $102 million, from the Louvre Museum. The theft happened on the morning of October 19, 2025. The crime lasted fewer than seven minutes.
After the thieves dressed as construction workers, they used a hydraulic lift to climb the museum wall. Using tools, they quickly cut open the glass cases.Police called the group an “experienced team,” and they caught two suspects. One had previously worked as a guard.
They found the Empress Eugénie’s crown outside of the museum, but it was broken. Officials worry that the eight missing jewels may be cut up to hide their origin; they will likely be sold for a hefty sum.
The theft showed big security problems. ABC news reporter Mason Leath indicated that the security camera password was just “Louvre.” French citizens are angry.
Museum administrators will spend $92 million to improve security in coming months.
