Beginning this year, Watertown High School has adopted a new initiative, The Warrior’s Way; started by long-term substitute Guidance Counselor, Ms. Cole. The Warrior’s Way is a “student-centered initiative designed to teach and reinforce social-emotional skills, leadership, empathy, and inclusivity,” said Ms. Cole. Each month, a new topic focuses on a major theme. By diversifying themes, students can deeply explore a topic while building practical skills over time. Ms.Cole urges students to embrace the lessons and contribute to a more positive environment, “the overall goal is to create a school culture where students feel supported to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.”
This program is integrated into social media posts and daily announcements, where students will hear a short lesson with a message that can be applied to their everyday lives. For example, a Warrior Principle can be, “Even small actions make a big impact.” Messages like these can remind students of their power to make meaningful choices that shape their community. She was inspired to begin the program when working at another school. A student approached her with an idea to promote change, growth, and social-emotional learning to make school a respectful community.
Our theme for November was “Gratitude and Growth Mindset.” The goal encourages students to reflect on sources of thankfulness. Some examples of daily tasks are greeting a new student, practicing active listening, or offering genuine compliments. They are designed to be small and achievable. Yet, with the participation of students and staff alike, these acts can make a major difference in our school climate.
