On October 23rd, the students of the Model United Nations (MUN) club at Watertown High School traveled to New York City for a unique diplomatic experience: a meeting with Blaž Slamič, Minister Counselor of the Slovenian Mission. Each year, MUN students are assigned a country to represent and research as if they were actual delegates to the United Nations. This year, their assigned country was Slovenia. The visit included discussions about Slovenia’s role in global affairs, its priorities within the UN, and the challenges it faces as a small European nation. Students were able to ask questions and gain insight into the responsibilities of global leadership.
On December 5th and 6th, the MUN students continued their diplomatic journey by attending the Connecticut World Affairs Council (CTWAC) Model United Nations Conference at the University of Hartford. This annual event brings together over 1,000 students from across the state to engage in debate, negotiation, and problem-solving on pressing global issues. At the conference, each student chose a committee, ranging from the Security Council to the World Health Organization, and prepared resolutions addressing real-world challenges. Topics included climate change, cybersecurity, refugee crises, and global health equity. Students collaborated with peers from other schools, practiced public speaking, and learned the art of compromise and coalition-building. The MUN club continues to offer students a platform to explore international relations, develop leadership skills, and become informed global citizens.
