For the fall season, the cross country team of Watertown High School has been hard at work, getting swifter and stronger to prepare for when they had to compete against other strong cross country teams. On Wednesday, October 19th, the Watertown High School cross country team competed in the NVL’s. The NVL’s, being the most important meet, was the team’s best meet this season, with many personal records (PR) being set during the race. The coach of the team, Coach LaFontaine, believes that the team is giving their best efforts and stated, “This team’s come a long way and I think they’ve done a great job, pushing through and getting better and better. We just had a league championship meet that pretty much the entire team PR’d.”

Many people believe that running long distance, or any distance at all, is boring and they wouldn’t do it, but these runners find it quite enjoyable. Some runners also find cross country as an outlet or an escape to when they are stressed. Most runners on the team originally joined cross country in middle school and continued into their high school years, and all throughout those years, they enjoyed it. Runner, Delilah Vaina said, “it feels good after you accomplish something like a big meet or a race.”

Even with all the hard work the team puts in to get better, runners still have to stay motivated and keep their spirits high. Teammember Kendall Croke said, “We show spirit as a team by supporting our seniors and believing in each other.” These runners don’t lose motivation or feel down when they have their teammates to support them.

As the fall season comes to an end, runners are satisfied with how much better they have gotten and how the team, as a whole, has grown. Even though they didn’t win it all, they still had satisfactory progress and won in their own hearts.
