The Volleyball Teamwork

As the 2022 volleyball season comes to an end, coaches, captains, and players share their ideas and the meaning about this year. Coach Mike Theriault has been the coach of the girls’ volleyball team for 8 years. He believes volleyball “brings back the burning passion to win and work hard.” Two great things about this team is its “selflessness and willing to give up a position for another player that is better in that position.” Mike says. During The St. Paul game, he saw the players fight and not give up even after they lost. Everyday he comes from a stressful day at work to a group of wonderful players that always makes him smile.

WHS science teacher, Ms. Gaydosh is Assistant Coach for the girls, played volleyball at both the high school and college level. She says her favorite thing about coaching this season is “the renewed excitement about volleyball and the girls working so hard.” Her go-to highlights this season are Casey O’toole’s blocks and tips as well as Sophia Angiolini’s hits.

Alana Johnson and Brielle Trudeau are the star captains of the year. Their hard work and dedication all four years of playing high school volleyball has been nothing but amazing. Alana is a right side hitter while Brielle is an outside hitter and a setter. When Brielle went into freshman year, she had a lot of playing time on the varsity team due to her experience and talent. “The chemistry in general is good. There’s no clicks or team drama.” Alana says, commenting on the fact that the team is collaborative and able to work together without hate and drama getting in the way. After they graduate, both girls are very interested in playing intramural volleyball in college. After the girls leave, they have a big hope for junior, Sophia Angiolini, to continue with the team traditions.

Lola Gaudino and Adrina Xhema are both freshmen and play on the freshman team. They are both setters and played at Swift Middle School. They enjoy the high school league way more because as Adrina and Lola say, “It’s more structured and effective.” Many think volleyball is under-rated mostly because not enough people play it. “The best part while playing volleyball is the positivity we give and get to each other.” Adrina states. During their game against Crosby High School, Lola brought out her jump serve and scored a streak of five points that she learned that day. Earlier in the season, Adrina started playing for the Junior Varsity team earlier and recently had playing time on the Varsity team. She has been a big help with her serves and massive kills.
